THE LION


The King of the JUNGLE. The lion is the largest and most powerful of the African carnivores.
Although the lion is called the king of the jungle, he is most often found in the grasslands of Africa, and not in the jungle.
The Lion's mane darkens as it gets older. The oldest lions can be spotted by their black hair. Manes also help male lions look more powerful to enable them to attract their mates.
Lions only kill for food and when they are hungry. Often a small animal can walk right in front of the lion and the lion will leave it alone, when it's not hungry.
Lions have been known to hunt wilderbeest and zebra, but when food is scarce have eaten giraffe, buffalo, rhinos and even elephants. Although females do the hunting, the males always eat first before the females and cubs.
